Today, I wanted to give you A Hand’s Perspective on a condition that often goes unnoticed but significantly impacts my daily life: arthritis. Specifically, I want to share with you how arthritis has affected my hands, my loyal companions in everything I do.
Arthritis isn’t just one disease; rather, it’s an umbrella term encompassing a variety of conditions that cause joint inflammation and stiffness. One of the most common types affecting the hands is osteoarthritis, where the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones wears down over time. Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disorder, is another culprit, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues, including those in the hands.
Even simple things become a challenge.
Maybe you all have had the same experience I’ve had. Imagine waking up to stiff, swollen fingers, making even the simplest tasks feel like climbing mountains. That’s the reality for many individuals battling arthritis. From brushing your teeth to tying your shoelaces, almost everything I try to do becomes a challenge. The once effortless act of gripping a pencil or turning a key becomes a test of my patience and endurance.
But it’s not just the physical limitations that weigh heavily on me; there’s an emotional toll too. Frustration, sadness, and even a sense of helplessness can creep in I grappled with the loss of dexterity and independence. It’s like watching your hands betray you, refusing to cooperate despite your earnest efforts.
However, amidst the struggles, I’ve found resilience. There are ways to adapt, whether through assistive devices, ergonomic tools, or simple lifestyle adjustments. Occupational therapy has played a role too, offering strategies to preserve my hand function and maintain quality of life. Moreover, the support of loved ones and the arthritis community provides a lifeline, reminding us that we’re not alone in this journey.
As an artist, I have a profound appreciation for the intricate dance between A Hand’s Perspective and creativity. To see that connection threatened by arthritis is heart-wrenching. Yet, I’ve also witnessed the remarkable tenacity of fellow artists who refuse to let arthritis dim their passion. They embrace new mediums, modify techniques, and redefine what it means to create art.
So, what can we do?
First and foremost, let’s educate ourselves and others about arthritis, erasing misconceptions and fostering empathy. Let’s advocate for research and innovation to improve treatments and find a cure. Let’s create inclusive spaces where individuals with arthritis can thrive, unencumbered by stigma or barriers.

With gratitude, Rhonda
