The Man Cave: Resources for Boomer-Aged Men

Hey guys, Michal here and Welcome to The Man Cave. This is area of the Big Bad Baby Boomer Blog is dedicated to unique challenges of male baby boomers! OK, so The Man Cave name IS a bit cliche. But in the name of full transparency, I’ve never had my own man cave so I thought I’d take some time to create an online version of one where we can hand out, learn a few things, and talk to other men who are going through the same changes as I am.

This is your one-stop guide for navigating the golden years with grace, vigor, and confidence. From maintaining your health (exactly what is a “Prostate”?) to exploring new hobbies (can I really play golf seven days a week?), this area of our blog covers a range of topics tailored to the unique needs of men of a certain age.

Baby boomer-aged men face a multitude of health and lifestyle concerns.

Many of us grapple with chronic illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes, largely due to a life-long pattern of unhealthy eating and lack of exercise. I had a mild heart attack last year and that was certainly a wake-up call for me. I realized it might just be time for me to take all those Men’s Health Magazine articles I read more seriously.

Alongside physical health, mental health is a significant issue, with many suffering from conditions like depression and anxiety. When you’ve spent much of your life defining yourself as a “Doctor” or “Lawyer” or “Teacher”, what happens when we retire and are no longer doing those things? How do we look forward and redefine ourselves?

  • Retirement planning is a common worry, with fears of outliving savings or not having enough to maintain the desired lifestyle.
  • Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia figure prominently in their concerns due to the increasing prevalence with age.
  • Prostate Health is a major worry, given that prostate cancer rates rise sharply after age 50.
  • Eye Health issues, including age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma, are also common concerns.
  • Many also worry about their Bone Health as osteoporosis can lead to frailty and injury.
  • Lastly, Social Isolation and Loneliness can be a significant issue, especially for those who live alone or have lost a partner. There is also the concern of maintaining sexual health and vitality.

Here are some of the topics we will be discussing:

Our blog content will be segmented into several key categories to address the different facets of our golden years.

  • Maintaining Heart Health
  • Prostate Health and Wellness
  • Balancing Work and Retirement
  • Managing Finances in Retirement
  • Strength Training for Seniors
  • Testosterone: Understanding and Managing Changes
  • Grandparenting Tips for the Modern Grandfather
  • Dealing with Male Pattern Baldness

Welcome to our community and I look forward to spending more time with you discussing the issues that we don’t always like to talk about (and also some fun topics too). In case you want to learn about issues that affect both men and women, come check out our Big Bad Baby Boomer Blog here:
